Our mission

We aim to become the most comprehensive and up-to-date source of information about photographers and photographic events worldwide.

How did it all start?

The Wotfoto website evolved from research done while we were working on a book 'How to Take Great Photographs'. Published in 2015, the book featured the work of a range of successful photographers with descriptions of how and why they created their images. During the book's research we amassed much information about photography and influential photographers – most of whom we did not have space for in the book. Rather than seeing this research lost, we decided to use it as the nucleus for this website.

From the outset the website has been designed to make it as simple as possible for users to search for information. We have made it easy too for photographers or galleries to take ownership and manage their listings on the site.

What does the site offer users?

The site is for anyone interested in photography. As the site develops you will be able to search for information about a wide range of professional, influential and historically important photographers. You can use our Search feature to focus on photographers who match your interests. You could search for Landscape photographers, or could narrow down your search, for example, to look for photographers who specialise in Street photography, and are based in New York.

You will also be able to search for photography-based events that are coming soon, or are taking place near you. If you register on the website you can select to have automated reminders when favourite photographers or venues have news – for example, when they have a new exhibition or a workshop.

Do you have to Register?

No, you don't have to register on the site to search for information. However, if you register you will be able to create new listings. As a registered user you will also be able add photographers or venues as Favorites, or add them to your Lists, so that you receive an email notification when they have news.

For photographers and galleries

It's free to add your details to the website so that users can find you, your work and your events. You can promote yourself, your gallery, your exhibitions, events, workshops or books.

Claiming listings

If a listing has already been created, for example, for you or your gallery, and you would like to take over its management, you can do so. Simply click on the 'Claim this listing' button in the bar at the top of the listing and we will get back to you telling you how to take it over. You will need to register on the website to do this.

Free listings on the website

There's no cost for users registering on the website. If you are a photographer or venue, such as a gallery, there is also no cost either for adding a basic listing to the website.

Premium listings

We offer Premium listings for some categories of listing. These cost $25, and help to support the development of the website. The benefits of a Premium list is that it lets you upload more images and text to your listing. The listing will also appear on the website in the various featured positions – meaning that more people see your listing. Premium listings will usually revert to a Free basic listing at the end of their term – ensuring that the key elements of your listing will remain on the website.
