DESCRIPTION
In April 2018 contemporary photography returns to Somerset House, London, UK, with the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition.
This major new exhibition will feature more than 600 inspirational images from across the Sony World Photography Awards, the world’s most diverse photography competition. It will also include three rooms of outstanding works by celebrated German artist Candida Höfer, recipient of the Awards’ 2018 Outstanding Contribution to Photography prize.
2018 SONY WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS
Curated by Mike Trow, former Picture Director, British Vogue, the presented winning, shortlisted and commended images have been specially selected from a record-breaking 320,000 submissions to the 2018 Awards, and will cover a wide variety of genres; from architecture to landscape, street photography to wildlife, portraiture to travel.
With all images having been taken in or commissioned for 2017, many of the works in the exhibition are being shown for the first time, providing audiences a true insight to the photographic trends that have shaped the last year.
CANDIDA HÖFER, OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO PHOTOGRAPHY
Candida Höfer is one of the world’s foremost contemporary photographers. The artist is renowned for her precise methodology and technique, and her powerful portraits of vast, empty interiors are held in collections around the world.
In celebration of Höfer’s contribution to the medium of photography, 10 trademark large format photographs have been personally selected by the artist to be shown at Somerset House. This includes three of Höfer’s most notable pieces – Musée du Louvre Paris XXI 2005, Hermitage St.Petersburg VIII 2014 and Trinity College Library Dublin I 2004.
