DESCRIPTION
The photography of Marc Pataut (Paris, 1952) is structured around the formulation of research projects which address those political and human issues which often stand outside art institutions’ parameters.
The exhibition, hosted by the Reina Sofia Museum, consists of social protest photographs taken by the French artist between 1981 and 2001. Marc Pataut’s artistic production is characterised by his social protest works and his photographs that raise awareness of the reality of underprivileged groups, with whom he shares the camera.
The exhibition features several of his photographic series, such as Hôpital du Jour, produced between 1981 and 1982. It was his first collaboration with public institutions involved with the most vulnerable groups. The exhibition focuses on the decade of the nineties, a period close to the labour demands which would result in a new concept of the political subject.
It was then when the photographer documented the emergence of new social movements in France. In this respect, the Cornillon / Gran Stade (1994-1995), La Rue (1996-1998), La table de chez Marc Ligocki (1998) and Sallaumines. Du Paysage a la Parole (1999) series are included.
The Laotil (1998-1999) project, made up of strolls around the grounds of an abandoned psychiatric hospital, Hôpital de Ville-Évrard, is also included. Furthermore, the exhibition includes the works by Pataut with Ne Pas Plier, an association of which he is the co-founder.
