DESCRIPTION
With the focus on internationally politically and socially engaged photography, the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus eV presents the largest photo competition in the world: the Sony World Photography Awards 2017. From 8 November 2017 to 21 January 2018, around 200 photos of the award winners will be presented for the first time Germany to see. On November 7, 2017, Gisela Kayser, Managing Director of the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus, Thomas Nedder, Country Head Sony Germany and Peter Franck, photographer and multiple award winner of the Sony World Photography Awards, will open the exhibition at 7.30 pm.

For the tenth year, the prestigious international competition will showcase the best that contemporary photography has to offer, from students to amateurs to professional photographers. From a total of 227,000 submissions, the jurors have again this year selected the most moving and impressive works.

There is hardly a photo contest that has so many different photographs available, some of which make you think and laugh. In the winners series "Whiteout", urban civilization and untouched nature collide. The German photographer Sandra Hoyn documents the everyday life of sex workers in the Kandapara brothel in Bangladesh with the series "The Desire of Others". The photographer Peter Franck shows his view of the sea in the category "Landscape". From nature photography to expressive portraits and abstract photos, the Sony World Photography Awards show a cross-section of photography from 183 countries around the world. For the first and only time, the work of all the winners as well as the photographers of the shortlists will be on display at the Willy Brandt Haus in Berlin.

As the Willy Brandt House is a magnet for many guests outside of Berlin, Sony and the Friends of Willy-Brandt-Haus eV are cooperating with the Amano Group's five Berlin hotels for the first time this year. An exclusive booking package for the opening plus a private tour with Peter Franck as well as a special offer for the entire exhibition period can be booked at www.amanogroup.de .

The Sony World Photography Awards were launched in 2007 with the support of Sony from the World Photography Organization (WPO). Promoting professional, amateur and student photography, the WPO provides the photographic industry with a global platform for communicating, collaborating and presenting current trends in photojournalism, fine art and commercial photography.
