DESCRIPTION
The best photos of the largest photo competition in the world in Berlin

For the fourth time, the Willy-Brandt-Haus Circle of Friends presents the world's largest photo competition: the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards. A total of 320,000 photos were submitted by photographers from more than 200 countries. Around 130 photos will be shown for the first time in the German capital.

For the first time in the history of the Sony World Photography Awards, one German photographer, Candida Höfer - one of the world's best-known contemporary photographers - has been awarded the "Outstanding Contribution to Photography" prize.

The international, prestigious competition shows in the eleventh year, the best that contemporary photography has to offer, from students to amateurs to professional photographers. There is hardly a photo contest that has so many different photographs available, some of which make you think and laugh. In the winning series "Ex-Voto" shows the British photographer Alys Tomlinson pilgrims and their travels in large black and white formats. With his photo series "The Burden" shows student Samuel Bolduc, what makes plastic waste with our environment. The photographer Balazs Gardi provides with his pictures an insight into one of the most brutal sports. "Buzkashi" is played in Afghanistan. 40 riders fight for a headless calf.

From nature photography to expressive portraits and abstract photos, the Sony World Photography Awards show a cross-section of photography from over 200 countries around the world.

The Sony World Photography Awards were launched in 2007 with the support of Sony from the World Photography Organization (WPO). Promoting professional, amateur and student photography, the WPO provides the photographic industry with a global platform for communicating, collaborating and presenting current trends in photojournalism, fine art and commercial photography.
