DESCRIPTION
Promoted by the Begihandi collective, GETXOPHOTO is a festival dedicated to image that takes place in Getxo (Basque Country) during September for the last 11 years. It brings different proposals from photographers and visual storytellers from all over the world to the city, setting a contemporary conversation about the theme proposed each year.

GETXOPHOTO inhabits the public space and continues supporting the use of formats, stands and unconventional exhibition spaces to show the different images. This is a thematic festival that every three years works together with a different curator who understands the photography as a tool of knowledge, communication, and of course artistic enjoyment. Exhibitions, installations, projections, collaborations, experimental laboratories and many activities complete the program of the Festival.

GETXOPHOTO supports the exploration and experimentation of formats and exhibition spaces. Without forgetting exhibitions halls and non- conventional indoor spaces, most of the works are mainly shown in public places, since one of its main identity signs is its strong defence of the public space as a meeting, enjoyment and reflection place. It is not about decorating the city but cutting it to tell stories through especially chosen images.

GETXOPHOTO understands the image as a means to approach, live and face the big issues that affect us. That is why the programming of each edition is articulated around a specific theme, always of general interest. Childhood, elderly, time or struggles, are for example some of the themes developed in recent years. Next year’s edition will revolve around Transitions 2 and will encompass the rethinking of the social contract within the tribe in this period of accelerated transformations

Without forgetting our local authors, GETXOPHOTO has an international vocation and each year it brings the work of a score of artists, selected by an artistic director of recognized career. Since 2017, Monica Allende is the festival curator.

includes the new narratives approaching, for example, the interactive, audiovisual or virtual reality installations showing the work of artists coming from different contexts that bet for multidisciplinary narratives.

See GETXOPHOTO means to take a tour, walk the city and meet or enter the exhibitions. The festival is designed, map in hand, to walk it calmly and comfortably in a few hours. In addition, it aspires to be a meeting point and exchange of experiences between authors, professionals and the public in general, an appointment where to learn without leaving aside the ludic aspect. During the opening week several of the participating artists come to the city and throughout the month there are many activities organized: guided tours, workshops, cinema, presentations and dialogues.
