The Vannes Photos Festival runs in Vannes in Brittany in north-western France from April 13 to May 13. A key theme of the festival explores the links between photography and the cinema.

The festival includes exhibitions, workshops and films; with events spread around a range of venues in the town.

The Magnum photo agency is involved, with an exhibition showcasing the work of its photographers that takes visitors behind the scenes of cinematic masterpieces including Charlie Chaplin’s Limelight (W. Eugene Smith), Billy Wilder’s The Seven Year Itch (Elliott Erwitt), Nicholas Ray’s Rebel Without a Cause (Dennis Stock), Orson Welles’ The Trial (Nicolas Tikhomiroff), John Huston’s Moby Dick (Erich Lessing), Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s Suddenly, Last Summer (Burt Glinn), Andrzej Zulawski’s L’important c’est d’aimer (Jean Gaumy), Michelangelo Antonioni’s Zabriskie Point (Bruce Davidson) and Volker Schlondorff’s Death of a Salesman (Inge Morath).

The Magnum exhibition features both classic and rarely seen photos of Hollywood’s finest such as Montgomery Clift, James Dean, Clark Gable, Katharine Hepburn, Charlton Heston, Dustin Hoffman, Buster Keaton, Klaus Kinski, John Malkovich, Marilyn Monroe, Gregory Peck, Anthony Perkins, Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne, Natalie Wood and many more.

The festival also features great names in photography, such as: Raymond Cauchetier, Didier Olivré, Frédéric Noy, Yann Rabanier, Patrice Terraz, Emanuele Scorcelletti, and Cédric Klapisch.

With the exception of some workshops, the Vannes Photos Festival is a free event, with the ambition to seduce lovers and purists of photography. An event faithful to the cultural and event policy of the city of Vannes.
