Bieke Depoorter was born in Kortrijk, Belgium. She received a Masters Degree in Photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent in 2009.

Her early colour work records the privacy of people whom she meets by chance and she gets to invite her into their homes. She captures indescribable, fragile and intense moments, always with kindness. For the Ou Menya series, Bieke spent three months travelling remote Russian villages, guided by the Trans-Siberian Railway. This work won her several awards, including the Magnum Expression Award (2009), and was published as her first book in 2011 (Lannoo). For long-term project I am about to call it a day, Depoorter went to the United States. A book of the same name was jointly published in 2014 by Edition Patrick Frey (Switzerland) and Hannibal (Belgium). Her third book Sete#15 was published in 2015 by Le bec en Lair.

After joining the Tendance Floue collective, she exhibited in 2011 at the Arles International Photography Festival. The next year, she was selected to take part in the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass. Bieke joined Magnum in 2012 and became a full member in 2016.
