DESCRIPTION / BIOGRAPHY
Carolyn Drake was born in California, USA. She studied Media/Culture and History at Brown University where she became interested in approaches to documentary and the ways that history and reality are purposefully shaped and revised over time. She worked for multimedia companies in New York for many years, before leaving her office job to study photography part-time at ICP and in the Visual Communication MA program at Ohio University.

In 2006, she moved to Ukraine, where she created photo stories along the perimeter of the country. Between 2007 and 2013, Carolyn travelled frequently to Central Asia to work on two widely acclaimed photography projects. The first, Two Rivers, explored the shifting borders, histories, and life systems between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers. The second, "Wild Pidgeon", is an amalgem of photographs, drawings, and embroideries made in collaboration with Uyghurs in western China. it is an allegory about the situation of Uyghurs, and more broadly, about the encroachment of modernity on individual and cultural freedom.

Carolyn is the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship, the Lange Taylor Prize, and a Fulbright fellowship, among other awards.
