John Stanmeyer is an American photojournalist based in Otis, Massachusetts. He is one of the founders of VII Photo Agency. Stanmeyer has received the World Press Photo of the Year, Robert Capa Gold Medal, Magazine Photographer of the Year from Pictures of the Year International, and a National Magazine Award for Photojournalism.

Working in nearly 100 countries, John had a contract with Time Magazine for over ten years producing 18 covers for the magazine. Since 2004 Stanmeyer has worked almost exclusively for National Geographic magazine.

In 2001, he co-founded with six of the world's leading photojournalists the VII Photo agency. In January 2015 Stanmeyer became a VII Distinguished Member. The same month, John brought his ten years of stories with National Geographic to National Geographic Creative while his historic archive of 20+ years of visual history remains at VII.

Stanmeyer's photography is held in many private collections and has been exhibited worldwide including in the Louvre in Paris, High Museum of Art in Atlanta, International Center of Photography in NYC, the UN, Minnesota Marine Art Museum, and other venues. His books include Island of the Spirits, a journalistic/anthropologic look at Balinese culture documented during the five years he lived on the island and numerous collaborative books with VII, most recently Questions Without Answers (Phaidon), was released in 2012.

In 2013 John opened Stanmeyer Gallery & Shaker Dam Coffeehouse in West Stockbridge, Mass.
