After studying life-drawing and painting at art college, Mark Power traveled in South-East Asia and Australia where he realised he enjoyed using a camera more than a pencil. On his return to England he decided to 'become a photographer'.

He worked in the editorial and charity markets for nearly 10 years, before he began teaching in 1992. This coincided with a shift towards long-term projects, alongside large-scale commissions from the industrial sector.

His work has been seen in numerous galleries and museums across the world, and is in several important collections.

He has published seven books: The Shipping Forecast (1996); Superstructure (2000; The Treasury Project (2002); 26 Different Endings (2007); The Sound of Two Songs (2010; Mass (2013); and Die Mauer ist Weg! (2014). Destroying the Laboratory for the Sake of the Experiment, a collaboration with the poet Daniel Cockrill, was published in June 2016.

In 2007 Mark curated the exhibition Theatres of War featuring the work of five artists whose work is concerned with contemporary conflict and surveillance.Mark Power joined Magnum Photos in 2002, becoming a full Member in 2007. He is Professor of photography at the University of Brighton.
