Ralph Gibson studied photography while in the United States Navy, before attending the San Francisco Art Institute and working as an assistant to photographer Dorothea Lange and filmmaker Robert Frank.

Working primarily with the Leica camera, and in black and white, Gibson is probably best known for his photographs of architecture and the human form, and for the use of bold light and dark shadow. Largely eschewing ‘commercial’ and advertising photography, Gibson’s inspiration comes from his broad range of interests including critical theory, music theory and art history.

Gibson has published over 40 books, his work has featured in numerous exhibitions and he is represented in over 150 public collections round the world.
