The Open Eye Gallery is a not-for-profit contemporary photography gallery based in Liverpool, UK.

We believe photography is for everyone and can be meaningful, informing our present and inspiring positive futures.

Open Eye Gallery works with people to explore photography’s unique ability to connect, to tell stories, to inquire, to reflect on humanity’s past and present, and to celebrate its diversity and creativity.

Founded in 1977 Open Eye Gallery is an independent not-for-profit photography gallery based in Liverpool.

We are one of the UK’s leading photography spaces, and the only gallery dedicated to photography and related media in the North West of England.

Open Eye Gallery has consistently championed photography as an art form that is relevant to everyone. We promote the practice, enjoyment and understanding of photography by creating challenging and entertaining opportunities to experience and appreciate distinctive, innovative photographs.

As well as presenting a programme of international, high-quality exhibitions we also house a permanent Archive containing photographs from the 1930s to the present day.

We support established and emerging artists, developing practical, critical and professional skills among photography practitioners; we also offer training and development opportunities to people within our local community.

We’ll work with photographers, artists, academics and communities to further the exceptional ways Photography Practice makes a meaningful contribution to the World. We’ll continue to push ourselves, and others, to inspire creative excellence and social change.

We’ll embed ways to actively listen, respond and engage, inviting constituents to shape our organisation. Photography is Created by Everyone. We develop open platforms inviting contributions to – and processes enabling co-authoring of – our programme, achieving our fundamental role in enabling creative diversity.

We’ll carry on working with others to try things out, take risks, learn and share learning.

Photography informs most contexts. We endeavour to research, investigate and learn with others through their contexts, using collective insight to innovate and inspire.

We are accountable to, and reliant on, partnerships to achieve ambitions. We collaborate with integrity, transparency and efficiency to evolve, mitigating risk. Through partnership, we secure resources to adapt to both challenging environments and Photography’s impactful role in Curating and Sharing our Lives digitally.

In November 2011 Open Eye Gallery re-launched in a brand new purpose-built home in one of the city’s most prestigious and prominent new developments on the Liverpool Waterfront.

The gallery opens onto a large covered public square and is split over two floors. On the ground floor we present our international programme of cutting edge contemporary photography. We also commission Wall Works – large-scale graphic art installations for the external facade of the gallery.

Our position at the heart of the regenerated Waterfront – next to the Museum of Liverpool and a stone’s throw from Tate Liverpool and Albert Dock – cements our commitment to the city and its vibrant cultural life.
